New ISS Camera to Provide Unprecedented Nighttime Imagery

PIANO, shown here after being installed on the ISS, was integrated and flown by the Department of Defense’s Space Test Program. PIANO will use the airglow layer as a flashlight to look at the ground. Photo courtesy NASA
With a successful installation onboard the ISS, preparation for PIANO to begin capturing images from space is now underway.
Aerospace engineers conduct nighttime tests of PIANO prior to launch to ensure it is fully operational.
